This introductory chapter outlines the importance of studying visual impairment from an ethnomethodological and conversation analytical (EM/CA) perspective. It provides a general overview of the research landscape regarding visual impairment and ends with an argument for adopting an EM/CA approach to the study of blind and visually impaired persons (VIPs). Specifically, the chapter emphasizes how an EM/CA approach enables a respecification of understandings concerning navigation, social inclusion, and objects and obstacles in space as practical accomplishments for VIP. It also outlines how the study of VIP provides opportunities to respecify broader understandings of human sociality regarding cooperation, the public nature of sense-making, the senses in interaction, and perceptual issues concerning spatial relations between bodies and objects in space.
